COMMON SENSE by Thomas Paine & THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE by Thomas Jefferson - These are two of the most enduring documents in American history. Common Sense converted thousands to the idea of independence. Six months later, the Declaration of Independence rallied the people to a new republic.

CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE by Henry David Thoreau & THE LIBERATOR by William Loyd Garrison - The practice of slavery spawned one of America's first protest movements. Thoreau and Garrison in reaction developed the techniques of civil disobedience and moral persuasion.

WEALTH OF NATIONS, Part I, by Adam Smith - In 1776, a shy professor from Scotland published a masterpiece on economics that would change forever what people thought of the role of government in the economy.

WEALTH OF NATIONS, Part II, by Adam Smith - These tapes, along with Part 1, cover themes such as unplanned economic order (the famous "invisible hand"), the division of labor, the theory of value and the role of free trade in economic prosperity.

ON LIBERTY by John Stuart Mill & VINDICATION OF THE RIGHTS OF WOMAN by Mary Wollstonecraft - Both authors were ardent defenders of individual rights. On Liberty was a defense of individual rights against the state. Vindication is considered the first declaration of women's rights.

THE PRINCE by Niccolo Machiavelli & DISCOURSE ON VOLUNTARY SERVITUDE by Etienne De La Boetie - With the Renaissance came new ideas on man and his relationship to government and society. Machiavelli wanted to expand governmental power over man, and La Boetie sought to limit it.

THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels & THE SOCIAL CONTRACT by Jean Jacques Rousseau - Two powerful thinkers, Rousseau and Marx, argue that the best interests of the individual consist in merging with the greater social good. These two works were destined to change the course of history.

REFLECTIONS ON THE REVOLUTION IN FRANCE by Edmund Burke & RIGHTS OF MAN by Thomas Paine - Burke, an Englishman, attacked the French Revolution. Paine, an Englishman by birth but an American by choice, rose to its defense. Their debate produced two of the best-selling books of the 18th century.

THE FEDERALIST PAPERS by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay - During the bitter debate over the ratification of the U.S. Constitution, this series of articles was published in various newspapers as a campaign to swing the pivotal state of New York.

LEVIATHAN by Thomas Hobbes - This work contains one of the most compelling arguments ever set forth in favor of a strong centralized government. Although condemned by many political theorists, this powerful book continues to fascinate.

TWO TREATISES OF GOVERNMENT by John Locke - Lock's ideas on individual liberty, government by consent and the right of revolution helped set the stage for the English Revolution of 1688, the American Revolution of 1776, and the French Revolution of 1789.

DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA by Alexis de Tocqueville - Alexis de Tocqueville considered American democracy to be the greatest political experiment of modern times, and in the 1830's he wrote what remains the best portrait ever of the American character.
